CHOCOLATIER CLAIRE ARIYAN
I’ve always wanted to own a candy shop. Happy colors and the smell of chocolate and caramel. A place where you feel sparks of joy and that lifts the spirits of those who need it, while making happy people even happier.
While sharing dreams and plans for retirement my husband Steve and I decided to open JOY Chocolate Co. This was my dream and I’m grateful Steve took it on as his own and partnered with me. But, he wasn’t going to let me off easy; he felt strongly I needed to make most of what I sell.
With the possibility in mind of transitioning careers to my dream job I began studying and experimenting with chocolate and making caramel. Many mistakes later, I still love it and I'm grateful for coworkers, family and friends who’ve been my taste testers providing honest feedback.
I've spent my adult life studying human nutrition and working with the critical care and oncology populations. I've loved this work and have always found it fulfilling although it’s heavy at times. Daily reminders we could all use a little more joy in our lives led me to choose the name JOY Chocolate Co.
We opened our shop in November 2022, JOY Chocolate Co---the place to visit to indulge your happy.
Our Little Shop
We’re located in the historic village section of the magical town of Essex, Connecticut. Our shop is located in a converted home dating back to the 1800’s, a historical landmark known as the “Farnham Parmelee Homestead.”
When you visit Claire will likely be in the kitchen making caramel or a variety of items from Belgium chocolate. Steve normally greets friends when they arrive and runs the register.
You’ll find a variety of candy from the US and around the world as our goal is to have something for everyone. We also offer a bespoke Guatemalan coffee with a chocolate note and in the colder months a gourmet single origin hot chocolate.
We named the shop “JOY” Chocolate Company because that’s what we want you to feel. Whether it’s the decor and atmosphere or the tinge of nostalgia at the sight of candy that reminds you of times past.
We are big dog lovers and couldn't imagine a joyful shop without something for these cherished family members---so we have treats for them too.
We look forward to seeing you in Essex!

Sam (black) and Beni. Sadly Beni is no longer with us. When you visit the shop look for her in the sky where she watches over us.
To honor Beni we adopted this nut. Her name is Lani and she and Sam bring us much joy.
